The Permaville Model for Sustainable Development or PMSD, defined:

  • AS A VISION, the model shall serve as an innovative and potent developmental framework that developmental organizations can utilize as a guide to come up with their own unique sustainable development program that aims to disproportionately benefit the poorest of the poor while working to mitigate climate change at the same time.

  • AS A MODEL DESIGNED TO EFFECT ‘QUICK WINS’ FOR ALL STAKEHOLDERS where:

o       Further disturbance and exploitation of the ecosystem is halted, and healing and restoration immediately initiated

o       Equitable access to basic needs (e.g. adequate and nutritious food, clean water, decent shelter, basic health care, child care, skill enhancement and education, and the opportunity to decide on matters affecting their own survival) are easily and equitably provided to the indigents and their families and,

o       The opportunities to utilize resources (especially those that are undervalued and idle) within an integrated innovative, economically viable, ecologically sound and socially responsible enterprise / program are opened up for the three main movers of society (the government, civil society and business), and the indigents (poorest of the poor).

·        AS A MODEL CONCEPTUALIZED TO GUIDE INTERVENTION PROGRAMS TO SUSTAIN LONG TERM GOALS where:

o       The government aided, civil society guided, and business sector empowered community as a powerful and cohesive entity capable of bringing out positive change in their own lives and that of the society, is institutionalized.

o       The full potential of the ecosystem to; support its own needs, contribute to the normal working of the earth’s biochemical, climatological and geological cycles and provide surplus yields for other life forms including man -either thru natural processes or as aided by appropriate technologies, is achieved and,

o       The people beneficiaries and their families were able to reach their full human potential as an valuable member of the society, as fine stewards of the environment, liberated from the shackles of indignity and abject deprivation

·        AS AN INNOVATIVE MODEL, IT ADVOCATES THE UTILIZATION OF :

o       PERMACULTURE - a holistic and integrated system analysis and design method where:

  • the essential resources and needs of all human development stakeholders - the development agencies, consisting of the three main movers of our society, the poorest of the poor, and the ecosystem,
        • the various  socio-culturally acceptable economic and legal frameworks, and
  • o       the various appropriate, low impact technologies,

are integrated into a well designed, flexible and site specific SUSTAINABLE HUMAN SETTLEMENT MASTER PLAN FOR ALLEVIATING EXTREME POVERTY referred to here as THE PERMATOPIA PLAN,

The PERMATOPIA MASTERPLAN distinctively works on;

o       Restoring / preserving ecological balance by imposing the specific site’s allowable limit to human settlement development (and population) based on the maximum carrying capacity of the area and so as not to hinder the full expression of the natural function, the site performs in relation to the wider ecology it belongs to, as revealed through permaculture design methodologies

o       Sustaining the basic needs for food, energy, livelihood etc. through community sponsored self reliance and self sufficiency programs rather than depend indefinitely on outside, usually unsustainably produced / processed products and services.

o       creating synergism with the three movers of society and the beneficiaries in contributing surplus time, money and energy to assist other communities in restoring / preserving ecological balance and in bringing back dignity to the lives of the poorest of the poor

And

o       PARTICIPATORY METHOD where people concerned are encouraged and guided to participate actively in

      • Critically analyzing their current problems / needs
      • Conceptualizing concrete actions to improve circumstance
      • Evaluating the effects and consequence of their    collaborative actions with a view to retain or change them

  • AS A MODEL FOUNDED UPON A LIFE CENTERED ETHICAL DESIGN SYSTEM SUCH AS PERMACULTURE, IT PROMOTES:
      • Care for the
      • Care for the people
      • The use of surplus resources to care for the earth and its people

  • AS A STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENTAL FRAMEWORK

ase 1

    • Accountable computer aided, ALTERNATIVE ECONOMIC SYSTEMS that primarily facilitates the indigents easy and equitable access to basic goods and services using resources for exchange other than the national currency (e.g. Necessities -For-Work arrangements and Creative Carbon Credits Market Utilization ).
    • SUBSISTENCE FOOD PRODUCTION SYSTEM (e.g. Bio-Intensive Gardening, Plant Propagation System)
    • ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION SYSTEMS for soil, plants and animals stability, and water storage capacity rehabilitation (e.g. Rainwater Harvesting System).
    • GREENBUILDING / ECO-BUILDING SYSTEMS for establishing energy efficient shelter and other structures (e.g.Rammed Earth Building Systems).
    • SMALL SCALE RENEWABLE ENERGY PRODUCTION SYSTEM (e.g. Photo-Voltaic Solar Power Generation System).

Phase 2

    • Accountable computer aided, ALTERNATIVE ECONOMIC SYSTEM that primarily facilitates LOCAL EXCHANGE TRADING within and between communities (e.g. COMPLIMENTARY CURRENCY SYSTEM, a minimal national currency based trading scheme).
    • AGRO-INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS (e.g. Edible OIl and Bio-Fuel Production).
    • INTENSIVE FOOD PRODUCTION SYSTEM ( e.g. Vertical Farming, Aerophonics / Hydrophonics Systems and Orchard Establishment)

Phase 3

    • CIVIL SOCIETY MANAGED, BENEFICIARY-SUBSIDIZED PERMATOPIAN CENTER DEVELOPMENT (e.g. Membership Club and Trust Arrangement)
    • ENDANGERED SPECIES / WILDLIFE PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION
